Scouting: I became, for a short time, assistant leader of the scouts at Devonshire Avenue, Southsea – I have a few photos to remind me of this, including a hike up Portsdown Hill; however, this was a short spell during my student days, and I could not really devote the time to make it a success. That was my last real involvement with scouting.

Motoring: At college at Portsmouth, I soon grew tired of bus journeys and walking, and eventually bought a 2nd hand scooter (an old 125cc one first, then later on a very stylish 200cc Lambretta, which lasted until I bought my first car at Romsey in 1966). I travelled home on holidays on scooter (to/from Coleford via Swindon and Gloucester) – on one such trip, taking my friend Harold Brown to Coleford for a weekend, we stopped for petrol at a garage between Cirencester and Gloucester, to be told by the man there that President Kennedy had been assassinated (they say that everyone remembers when and where they heard that piece of news).

Photography: I bought my first camera – an Ilford 35mm camera, and “started”.
