Canadian Holiday
- Day 9 : Tuesday 16th September
After a long drive yesterday, the plan for the day was to stay in the Okanagan area, and we’d suggested to Phil and Mabel that we’d quite like to visit Rosalie Churchill (after whom my sister Rosalie was named – well, a mixture of her and our Grandma Rosa Cook). Waking up, we enjoyed the wonderful view from our B&B, looking East over the lake to the other side. Phil and Mabel drove to join us, and we piled into one car and drove down the West side of the lake to Penticton. This route passed such notable places as Summerland and Peachtown – clearly named after the fruit-growing industry. And after finding our own way from the maps for so much of the holiday, we benefited from expert commentary on this drive.
We went straight to Rosalie’s apartment, and found her well and looking forward to the day. We had quite a lot of catching up to do, and after much chat, Rosalie led our “convoy” of cars to one of her favourite eating places for lunch – and she had arranged for Otto and Janet Barke to meet us all there (we’d met Gordon Barke and his wife in Edmonton), so it was a really nice party. Otto and Janet then came back to Rosalie’s apartment with us, and there was more chat, and we showed photos, the family tree, and felt very much at home. We were entrusted with a mug to take back to the UK, labelled “Rosalie”, to pass on to the UK person of that name! Over all too soon, we set off back to our B&B, and after a meal with Phil and Mabel and a walk along the Kelowna waterfront (with the two acrylic statues of dolphins and sails) we retired to the B&B for the night.
