Canadian Holiday
- Day 10 : Wednesday 17th September
After a low-mileage day yesterday, today we were scheduled for the long drive to Vancouver. We retraced the road down to Penticton, but without our “guides” so we had to remember what they’d said! Then we headed Westwards; the scenery was largely farming for a few miles, and then we found ourselves in wooded valleys and hillier scenery – one river valley looked exactly like a river crossing in a cowboy film I’d once seen, so we stopped and took a photo of it – we later were told that it had indeed been used for filming.
Phil had told us that cousin Emma Moores lived at Princeton, and that was on our route. So when we got there, we phoned her – and she was at home and invited us round. She was able to give us more details of that part of the family, and we promised to meet her daughter Sherryl in Vancouver, if at all possible.
The rest of the drive was long – and it seemed a very long way from leaving the high ground, to getting to Vancouver. As we descended Katie spotted red maple trees – something perhaps she’d been looking out for – but hadn’t seen any on the high ground; as we descended, we saw some and stopped for photos. Eventually we hit the Fraser valley, and then we started to see more and more buildings, and then hit the townships surrounding Vancouver. Our destination was cousin Lorraine’s house, and thanks to internet street maps and her directions, we got there with little trouble, and met her three-generation family. After a long drive, it was good to be still again.
