What we believe …

We believe in God, the Father almighty,

We are referring here to a supreme, eternal being – but one who wants to have the relationship of a loving Father with us.

The concept of God is that of a Supreme Being … supreme in the sense of power and glory, and in the sense of being “above” us humans in every way. The God revealed in the Bible is “outside” time and space – there never was and never will be a time when He was not, and He is not limited by the vastness or constraints of Space and Time. Our minds cannot begin to imagine such a being, such an intelligence and wisdom, such enormity of power, such majesty and glory. Such a God could not be understood by a human being, any more than a worm can be said to understand a human; the story of the Bible is of God bit by bit revealing Himself to mankind. There will be much more of this in “Perfect Sense”.

Even if we could partially understand Him, we could not comprehend how such a Being could want to have an intimate loving relationship with us – could you have that sort of relationship with a microbe?? Yet that is the theme behind the message of the Old Testament, and is the message of the New Testament. Two barriers get in the way of such a relationship – the disparity in status between us and God, and our sin. The New Testament records how Jesus came to earth to solve these two problems.

Why is this important?

·         The concept of God, without “Father”, is too awesome to comprehend and too terrifying to contemplate.

·         The concept of “father” without “God” is too dependent on how we regard our human fathers (I was so fortunate!!)

·         Bring the two together, and we can get a glimpse of something (someone) amazing and wonderful.
