[8] Mr & Mrs Garland, of Penn, Bucks had issue Ellen, Thomas, Sarah and James; I believe there were others but I did not know them (footnote 1).
· Ellen married John Birch (see next page)
· Thomas was a missionary to seamen in the Port of London, and had a numerous family.
· Sarah married an Italian and went to live in Italy, where she lived for 40 years, when her husband died, and then came to live in England where I knew her.
· James lived in Southall, and was on the local board there, a good man.
[9] John Birch Senior had issue Hannah, Augusta, John; also Mrs Hughes and Mrs Jeffries.
John Birch (Junior) and Ellen Garland had issue
· Edward Alfred
· Ernest Albert
· Lillian Garland
· Ellen Rosa
· Frederick Lissolo; the latter after his Aunt Sarah’s husband Mr Lissolo.
This Mr Lissolo was trained as a R. C. Priest but was converted to Protestantism and formed the Waldensians (footnote 2), and then the Wesleyans? – am in doubt about the last statement, but I think I’m right as he attended the Wesleyan Conference in England and that is where he met Miss Sarah Garland (footnote 3) . In Italy she nursed during epidemics; smallpox occurred annually about this time, and she had her hands full.

2. Waldensians – according to the dictionary, “a Christian sect of dissenters originating in Southern France in the late 12th Century under the leadership of Peter Waldo, a Lyons merchant. Also called Vaudons”. So presumably he founded a branch of this sect.
3. Sarah’s passport, dated 15th August 1863, is in our family archives.
