[4] Having
introduced myself, it becomes me to go back and bring into the present account
as many as I can of those of my family who preceded me, and without them (some
of them at least) I should not have arrived.
So on pages 6 and 7 I have
prepared a chronological table, as near correct as I have learned from my
parents and friends, as possibly am able.
My grandfather,
William Moores, was a farmer, and occupied a farm called the "Linceys"
(spelling doubtful) at Upper Winchenden, near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire; he
married Mary Reid, of the same locality I believe, as people did not marry
foreigners, as those living at a distance were regarded in those days, as taken
it for granted and we shall not be far wrong; beside that, people settled on
farms did not travel far - really had no need to. [5] And again, it was before the days of the steam engine, and
the horse was then the best means of travel either for business or
pleasure. My grandmother used to sit on
a pillion on a horse, behind my grandfather, when out on pleasure. I dare say they had a vehicle of some kind
for conveyance, other than farm wagons, as farming was a prosperous business in
those days, and my grandfather made enough money to retire and live on their
principal, after the family had grown up and gone from home.
There were 6 sons
and 2 daughters in this family: William, John, Robert, Mary, Sarah, James,
Joseph and Thomas. All were average sized, some above, except Thomas the
youngest - he was so small at birth, his mother thought she could never rear
him; yet he outlived them all and died in his 90th year. He was my father.
