6.  A growing Family – Farnham Common and Beaconsfield

6.8                          National events and history

When we lived at Farnham Common, Katie would sometimes take the two boys to Windsor for a day out, and on one occasion while taking them round the Castle (this was before admission charges to the grounds were enforced) was taken in tow by a Policeman, who took them to the top of the Long Drive and told to wait there a few moments – and after just a little while, the Royal Party emerged in their carriages to drive presumably to Ascot, and went “right past them”, to their great excitement.

1977 marked the silver jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, which was marked by fancy dress (for the children), street parties, and a “parade” of floats in Beaconsfield High Street.

Later in 1981 was the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, which we celebrated at Heath Road, Holtspur with a street party (Rosalie was with us, back from Zaire on furlough at the time).
