I cannot remember many during these three years.
However, this may be the place to record my feelings at the death of Lord Louis Mountbatten, killed by the IRA in August 1979. No-one who had not lived in Romsey during his time there could imagine how well loved he was in the town; his wife, who died before I came to Romsey, had been if possible even more loved. It wasn’t just that they were patrons of almost every society or group, or their donations, or their prestige – they simply thought the world of the town and the people who lived there, and treated everyone they met as important. It was the same sort of gift and service that the Queen Mother had, to make the occasions “special” for everyone who met them.
