Enigma

Lo! As by life’s highway

I wandered wearily

Longing for company,

Looking suspiciously

Into the face of riches

Answering, “No, my wishes

Ne’er tend that way.

Gently there came in view

A good friend, sweet and true

Rendering harmonies,

Lifting me up.

Added attraction,

No counter-action

Drawing me back.

Blessed warm sunshine

I love to bask in,

Right royal treasure

Cherish I ever;

Happier, never!

By T W Moores

Date of writing unknown, but doubtless before their marriage in 1884

Mother had named it “Enigma”, but I believe meant “Acrostic” (footnote 1)

Transcriber’s footnotes:

1. The words in italics were in pencil, and initialled OOL (Olive Lockhart, his youngest daughter); Olive was a poetess herself, but I suspect that she had found an early copy of the original and had added the words in.
