A F T E R G L O W

My windows face the western sky

   each evening I can view

The setting sun. Its glorious light

   Streams forth, against the blue.

And when, at last, it disappears

   beyond the farthest hill

A wondrous brightness floods the sky

When all is calm and still.

And then, to all mankind is given

(just at this time of year)

A lovely miracle from Heaven

   which brings a message clear.

For, when the sun is really gone

   We see the "Afterglow"

Bathing the sky in rosy light

   which touches all below!

E'en so, when one who loves the Lord

   departs this earthly sphere

We turn our gaze upward to Heaven

and see, so bright and clear

A lovely 'afterglow' spread forth

   across our memories sky

The memory of his life. His love

   for all humanity.

For when the soul, its duty done

   sinks slowly in the West

And disappears from human view

in Heaven he's safe and blest.

If, on the darkness of this world

   he casts his afterglow

T'will lighten, bless and comfort, too,

   all those he loved below.

Oh, may that brilliant afterglow

   Inspire our hearts, our words;

May we, like him, to others show

The love of Christ, our Lord.
