This is a book of old photos of Ely, taken and published by J F Burrows (1870-1964) who had a shop in the High Street. It was discovered by Margaret Palmer in Canada, and I have passed it to my cousin Heather Hodges nee Cook, his granddaughter.

Front cover:

Next picture: Palace Green and West front

Next picture: this was loose in the book, and is not named. The photographic quality is very different from the rest of the pictures – it is almost certainly not Ely (which never had trams), and probably dates from a much later time.

Next picture: inside Ely Cathedral

Next picture: Market place, with the cathedral in the background

Next picture: The Gallery, and entrance to Park

Next picture: Ely High Street

Next picture:  Market Street

Next picture: Fore Hill (anyone who thought the Fen country had no hills, think again!)

Next picture: St Mary’s Street

Final picture: Shire Hall

Transcribers footnote:

What has struck me in reproducing this book is firstly the quality of the Photography. Secondly, the empty streets .. James Frederick Burrows described himself as a journalist/reporter in the 1901 census, and as a journalist printer and stationer in 1911; these photos must have been taken in the first 20 years of the twentieth century.
